 FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can I wear contacts?

To determine if you are a good candidate for contact lenses a comprehensive eye exam is needed. Our doctors will check the prescription your eyes need, the curvature of the front surface of your eyes, and the overall health. This exam will determine if it is safe for you to wear contacts and what type of contact lenses you would need.

How does diabetes affect vision?

Diabetes can cause patients to have fluctuating blurry vision as blood sugar spikes or is unstable. Diabetes can also cause permanent vision loss from damage to the blood vessels in the back of the eye. A yearly exam with dilation is needed to ensure that any damage is caught early before it causes vision loss for the patient.

When can I expect my glasses?

Glasses are ordered the same day you pick them out. Most glasses are ready for pick up in about two weeks.

How long does an exam take?

A routine eye exam typically takes between 20 minutes to an hour, however you should plan to be here long enough to also pick out glasses.

Can my Optometrist help with my medical exemption for tint in my car?

Unfortunately, our staff is not able to help with the medical exemption for tints.  A medical doctor or Ophthalmologist may be willing to assist you by completing the required form in New York State.  Ophthalmologists and optometrists are both eye care professionals, but they have different training and areas of expertise which is why our office of Optometrists are not able to assist with this process.

What does near sighted mean?

Nearsightedness, also known as myopia, is a refractive error where distant objects appear blurry while near objects remain clear.

Causes:

  • The eyeball is elongated, causing light to focus in front of the retina instead of on it.

  • The curvature of the cornea or lens is too steep.

What does far sighted mean?

Farsightedness, also known as hyperopia, is a refractive error where the eye focuses light behind the retina instead of on it. This causes distant objects to appear clear, while close objects appear blurry.

Causes:

Short eyeball length, Cornea that is not curved enough, and Lens that is not strong enough.

What does monovision mean?

Monovision is a vision correction technique that involves correcting one eye for distance vision and the other eye for near vision. This creates a "blended vision" effect, where the brain combines the information from both eyes to achieve clear vision at all distances without the need for reading glasses or bifocals.

How it Works:

  • The dominant eye (usually the one used for aiming) is corrected for distance vision.

  • The non-dominant eye is corrected for near vision.

This allows the individual to see clearly at both close range and far away, simply by switching their focus between the two eyes.

Benefits:

  • Eliminates the need for reading glasses or bifocals

  • Improves depth perception and spatial awareness

  • Provides a more natural and convenient way to see at all distances

Drawbacks:

  • Can take some time to adjust to

  • May cause depth perception issues in some individuals

  • Not suitable for everyone, especially those with significant differences in eye power or those who require precise depth perception for their job or hobbies

Do blue light glasses actually work?

The American Academy of Ophthalmology does not recommend blue light glasses for computer use, as there is no scientific evidence that blue light from screens damages the eye.
